Lying some 40 miles (64 km) the west of London, where the River Thames and the Kennet & Avon Canal meet, Reading is the county town of Berkshire. With a history stretching back more than 1200 years, it has a wealth of listed buildings, but today it is perhaps best known for the Reading Festival, one of Britain’s biggest music festivals.
A major junction point of the National Rail system, Reading station is situated on the northern edge of the town centre, close to the main retail and commercial areas, and is soon to undergo substantial redevlopment. It is served by three train operating companies - First Great Western, South West Trains and CrossCountry. Railway lines link Reading to both Paddington and Waterloo stations in London.
